Australian Gold Exploration Hits Record High, but Export Earnings Forecast to Slide
Gold exploration spending reached a record $566 million in the June quarter 2026, up 24% on the previous quarter, according to the Department of Industry, Science and Resources' Resources and Energy Quarterly. Australian gold production is forecast to rise from 340 tonnes in 2025-26 to 382 tonnes in 2030-31, yet export earnings are forecast to edge down from $70 billion to $68 billion as lower gold prices and a modest rise in the AUD/USD rate offset higher volumes. The report has gold averaging US$4,600 an ounce in 2026, up 34%, easing to US$3,760 in real terms by 2031.
