Comex December gold rose 2.3% to $4,401 an ounce and September silver 3.6% to $63.85, both seven-week highs. US payrolls fell 23,000 in July against expectations of an 80,000 gain.

Chairman John Thornton's plan to spin off Barrick's North American mines into an IPO is drawing opposition from Van Eck, Mackenzie and Franklin Equity Group. Mackenzie's Benoit Gervais has publicly called for Thornton to exit. Barrick has still not named a CEO or a domicile for the new company.
