The Trump administration has cleared a legal path to proceed with Resolution Copper's Oak Flat project in Arizona, one of the world's largest known copper deposits, after the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals allowed the federal land exchange to proceed in March. The site is considered sacred by the Apache people, and the Indigenous coalition Apache Stronghold has vowed to keep fighting despite the Supreme Court's rejection of their appeal last year. The mine is expected to open by the mid-2030s.

The ASX 200 closed slightly higher at 8,379.40 on Tuesday as a 2.87% surge in the Materials sector offset sharp losses in financials and technology. Indigenous Ghanaian firm Engineers and Planners (E&P) plans to invest approximately US$1.2 billion into its contract mining operations at Gold Fields' Tarkwa and Damang gold mines, building on an earlier US$650 million commitment in 2018. The company has dispatched 30 Caterpillar 785D dump trucks to site as part of the phased fleet expansion. E&P is also positioning to become owner-operator at Damang following Gold Fields' lease expiry on 18 April 2026.

BHP has outlined how it is applying data, AI and automation across its operations, with digital and analytics initiatives delivering over US$2 billion in value over the past four financial years. The company is developing a Central Data Platform to standardise exploration data globally and using generative AI to convert historical geological records into usable datasets. BHP has recently partnered with South Africa's Council for Geoscience and the Government of Canada to digitise legacy geoscience data, calling for broader industry collaboration to address data fragmentation.

Ghana's Armed Forces have raised formal alarm over the proliferation of illegal and improvised weapons inside the country's mining zones, warning that armed criminal networks are increasingly militarising illegal mining operations. The warning was delivered at a workshop in Takoradi organised by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, where field research showed illegal miners using weapons to secure gold-bearing land, control access routes, and deter rivals.

Resources Minister Madeleine King confirmed at Minerals Week in Canberra that Australia's $1.2 billion Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve will include a price floor, with the government to consult industry on pricing that reflects the cost of production. King said the government must step up to support projects that struggle to get off the ground due to an opaque and manipulable international market, and flagged the reserve could cover a combination of commodities and evolve over time.
