Speaking at the 2026 Mining Expo Living the Mining in Cananea, Sonora, AIMMGM president Rubén Del Pozo called on Mexico to commit to green, modern, and competitive mining as a driver of the energy transition and social well-being. Del Pozo warned that the mining-metallurgical sector is contending with legal uncertainty, cost pressures, and price volatility, all of which are complicating project development and undermining the country's ability to consolidate a more sustainable model.

Swedish miner Boliden has warned that abnormally high seismic activity at its Garpenberg zinc and copper mine earlier this month will reduce Q1 2026 EBITDA by approximately 400 million Swedish crowns ($43 million). Throughput for the quarter came in just under 0.8 million tonnes against an expectation of over 0.9 million tonnes, and production in the most affected part of the mine is not expected to resume this year. Until further notice, Garpenberg will operate at around 30% of its guided annual capacity of 3.7 million tonnes while ventilation, pressure air, and electrical infrastructure is repaired over the coming weeks.

Barrick Mining will slow development of the Reko Diq deposit in Pakistan's Balochistan province and extend the timeline due to regional security concerns. The delay reflects broader concerns about the Middle East conflict's impact on major mining projects.

ESG advisor Kevin D'Souza, speaking at PDAC 2026, argued that mining companies are drowning in metrics and compliance exercises while losing sight of what actually matters. "We're trying to measure everything, but we don't know what for," D'Souza said, warning that ESG ratings have become more about optics than performance, with companies spending heavily on consultants and software at the expense of the science and site-level engagement that genuinely builds credibility.
